Another Hope Shattered
Stephen Baldwin has announced that he is not leaving the country after the election of Barack Obama, despite his threat to do so before the election. Now he says he was only kidding. Well, heck.

In Missisippi, some students were threatened with punishment, including expulsion from school, for saying “Barack Obama”. Sigh… (thnx J!)

Can you remember any other president in recent memory that someone would have, for free, done something like this and kept doing it after the election?
I almost busted a gut when I saw this…

Apparently not everyone in the world is as excited about the Obama win as I am. My blog traffic is MUCH higher than usual today. Here are the top 19 things people typed into Google today to find my blog. Number four (my name) is usually number 1. That next to last one scares me…

If this stuff happened in a third world country, we would send the UN in to monitor the elections…

This one is pretty easy. It was Malia, my 10-year-old daughter's birthday party. We were in Montana. And you know, she's a Fourth of July baby. So often times, during this campaign, we'd be traveling during birthdays. And so we were in this small hotel, I think a Holiday Inn. And we had this big public thing. The staff organized for a smaller family party. And we were in this nondescript conference room—with—Malia and Sasha, Michelle, me, my sister, my brother-in-law and my niece. And there was a cake. And there was some food which wasn't, you know, stellar. And the staff had put together an iPod of all of her favorite music. The Jonas Brothers and Beyoncé. And we spent the evening just dancing. And we were all dancing to their favorite songs. And they were laughing because, you know, obviously their daddy is dancing ridiculous. And Malia came up and said, "This is the best birthday I've ever had." And she meant it. And—and I looked at her and I realized—you know, that she was growing up. And that she was wise, turning out to be somebody who would say that to her dad even if she didn't mean it, just to make me feel good. And yeah, it chokes me up right now talking about it. Yeah, my kids get to me every time.
Once upon a time (and not all that long ago), I was a member of the religious right. I fought for the election of ‘Christian’ candidates, encouraged others to vote for Christian candidates, followed the (I am ashamed to say this…) voting guidance of James Dobson and his ilk and believed that the single most important issue on the table was overturning Roe v. Wade.
I try really hard not to get political on here, because I know what it is like to have an opinion and force it down everyone’s throat. I have been that guy, and do not want to be that guy ever again, even when I am fighting for the other side.
That being said, my politics began to change a few years ago when I began to follow Jesus (as opposed to merely being ‘Christian’… you know, say a prayer, believe Jesus = God, plan on heaven when I die). I began to want to imitate him, to try to be like him, to really follow him. And, it changed everything.
I have several friends who have reported similar happenings. However, it is never easy. To see a great example of the sort of struggles that such a decision can make in your life, you may want to read this great post by Will Samson, who was an anti-abortion activist, who believes his decision to follow Jesus has led him, for the first time, to vote against the anti-abortion candidate.
When you read it, do not focus on the specific candidate he is supporting. Rather, look at the reasoning he puts into it, the issues he addresses. I could have truthfully written 90% of that post.
Yes, I know Jeremiah Wright is old news now that Obama has thrown the man he thought of as his father under the bus. However, I just came across this article talking about the role of the Black Church in America, both traditionally and currently and I thought I would share it. It is very well done and highly recommended. Maybe one day soon I will expand on the topic, but for now, enjoy!
