I am a Minister in the Mennonite Church USA and am the founder and director of Love Wins Ministries, where I pastor a congregation made up mainly of people who are experiencing chronic homelessness.
This is my personal blog, where I post my thoughts about faith, justice and culture, as well as personal posts about my family and so on. Occasionally I write about other things – the miscellaneous category is just what it says it is.
I post both links to interesting (to me) things as well as lengthy essays. I tend to post one longish post a week and a few link posts each week. To make sure you don’t miss a thing, you can subscribe for free via RSS or Email.
Since this is my personal blog, I won’t talk a lot about the practical aspects of my day to day work here – if you want to know more about that, you might want to check out our Love Wins Ministries site and blog. Also, you might want to read my disclaimers, where I remind you that the words here are mine, and mine alone.

I used to be very heavily involved in Social Media, but anymore just do not have the time to do it well. Instead of setting up expectations I cannot meet, I restrict my social media time to Twitter. Any requests to join your tribe or posse or gang on other sites will be summarily ignored.
About Me
As you may have caught on, professionally I minister to the very poor and homeless. What gets me in trouble is my belief that God is far more gracious and loving than I could ever be. I am fortunate to be supported in this by a wide ranging group of folks – church folk, hipsters, punks, gays, lawyers, writers, artists, school teachers, home makers, atheists. Some of these folks help us in practical work, and others support us financially and still others retweet my stuff ridiculous numbers of times. We are incredibly grateful for all of that.
My wife Renee (renee79 on twitter) and I live in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina (but not the part most folks want to live in) – sorta figuring that it is hard to tell poor people “I know how you feel” if the gunshots did not keep you awake last night, too. We have two very spoiled cats; Felix, who was born in squalor in a trailer park until we took him away from all of that, and Tony, who was living under a house until we rescued him when he was several weeks old.
In my very limited free time, I enjoy writing, reading, gardening and talking smack with my friends.
Catching Up
Old friends often find me on the internet and want to catch up. I love doing it, but who has that kind of time? The best way to know what is going on in my life now is to follow my blog. If you want to know what I have been up to, check out my bio page.
